What are the benefits of Norwegian citizenship?

As a Norwegian citizen, you have all the rights of a Norwegian. The treatment you receive in Norway should not differ in any way from the treatment of someone who was born in Norway. The privileges of Norwegian citizenship:

  • Help from the Norwegian government at home and abroad
  • The right to enter the country in any situation
  • Possibility to apply for any loans (e.g. student, housing) available only to persons with permanent residence or citizens
  • Access to Norwegian and cooperating embassies around the world
  • Possibility of visa-free travel to countries with which Norway has concluded such an agreement (including the USA)

Who can obtain Norwegian citizenship?

If you are between 18 and 67 years old and have previously registered as an EU resident in Norway, you must meet the following conditions:

  • pay for the official application
  • have an ID card enabling your identification. A passport is usually required.
  • you must live in Norway and plan your future here
  • you must complete 300 hours of training in Norwegian culture at an accredited school or document good knowledge of Norwegian culture by passing the norskprøve exam or a similar exam at a minimum level B1 in all sections (there are a few more options, but in practice it is easiest to pass the exam)
  • you must pass an accredited oral language exam at a minimum level of B1 (if you also pass the rest of the parts, you will also meet the previous condition)
  • you must pass the civics exam (samfunnskapsprøven) or the citizenship exam (statsborgerprøven)
  • you need to order a politiattest (here we will arrange it on your behalf). It cannot be older than 3 months.
  • decide whether you want to give up your current citizenship (Norway does not require this from January 1, 2020)
  • you must have lived in Norway for at least 8 years in the last 11 years.
  • you must have lived in Norway with full residence permit for the last 3 years (work or be registered as the family of a person with residence permit)
    NOTE: Normal oppholdstillatelse is not enough, permanent oppholdstillatelse is required.

What do we need to perform the service?

  • Altinn login details
  • Confirmation of the official application rate fee
  • Personal data - we will ask you by phone
  • Confirmation of passing the B1 level language exam in all parts (recommended path) or alternative documentation
  • Confirmation of passing the social studies exam or alternative documentation
  • Police certificate (or we will arrange it on your behalf through Altinn)
  • Confirmation of residence in Norway for 8 years and registration with the police at least 3 years ago (e.g. through employment contracts, annual settlements, etc.)

What does the service include?

The service includes:

  • Checking the fulfillment of the conditions for citizenship and informing about any deficiencies
  • Completing the documentation necessary to obtain citizenship
  • Obtaining a certificate from the police
  • Setting the date of the visit and the place of the visit in order to check the identity and submit documents
  • Instructions on what to bring to your visit and what to do
