NAV insurance for ENK owners - what does it provide and how much does it cost?

The transition from summer to autumn means one thing for many people - seasonal illnesses. Employees can use paid sick leave in such situations, which allows them to recover in peace without worrying about finances. Self-employed people (owners of sole proprietorships - ENK) are in a slightly different situation, as sickness benefit is payable only from the 17th day of illness. However, it is possible to take out additional insurance with NAV, which allows sykepenger (sickness benefit) to be paid from the 1st day of sick leave.

Who is entitled to sykepenger?

  • You must have a sick note for at least 20%.
  • You must live or work in Norway, and therefore be a member of the Norwegian social security system.
  • You must have worked for at least 4 weeks immediately before falling ill.
  • You must be under 70 years of age.

In addition, the average annual income must be at least 62 014 NOK. For ENK, the calculation is based on income from the last three years or the period since the business started, if the company has been operating for a shorter time.

How long can you receive sykepenger?

  • For the first 16 days, the benefit is paid by the employer, and then by NAV. In the case of full sick leave, you can receive 100% of your salary.
  • People running a sole proprietorship (ENK) do not have an employer, so they are entitled to benefit from the 17th day of illness and only at 80% of income, unless they take out additional insurance with NAV, which extends these rights.

What exactly does the insurance provide and how much does it cost?

If you run an ENK and want 100% sickness benefit or to receive it from the first day of sick leave, you can take out additional insurance with NAV. Under this insurance, you can choose one of three options:

  1. 80% sykepenger from the 1st day of illness.
  2. 100% sykepenger from the 17th day of illness.
  3. 100% sykepenger from the 1st day of illness.

Let us move on to the costs. The premium is calculated on the basis of the average annual income from the last three years and amounts to:

  • 3% of the expected average annual income for the option with 80% from the 1st day of illness.
  • 1,3% of the expected average annual income for the option with 100% from the 17th day of illness.
  • 11% of the expected average annual income for the option with 100% from the 1st day of illness.

If you run a sole proprietorship and want to protect yourself in case of illness, it is worth considering additional insurance with NAV. It can give you more comprehensive financial support in the event of sudden sick leave.
