Minimum wage rates in Norway from 1 July 2021
⚠️ LEARN ABOUT THE MINIMUM WAGE RATES FROM 1.07.2021 – IMPORTANT FOR EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS! ⚠️
As a break from coronavirus, I encourage you to read about the minimum wage rates. The employer should automatically change your hourly rate from 1.07.2021 if you would otherwise earn less than the minimum wage. The minimum wage applies to employees on an employment contract paid by the hour and on permanent contracts. The rate does not apply to sole proprietorships.
⚠️ CONSEQUENCES OF THE RATE CHANGES FOR EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES
The employer is obliged to comply with the new minimum rates. If the employee currently earns above the minimum rate set out in the regulations, the employer does not need to do anything. However, if the employee earns less, the rate must be increased. No consent from the employee is required for the increase. Failure to increase the rate may result in later back payments with interest and possible compensation for the employee. The employee has the right to demand the minimum rate or higher. The employee can report rates that do not comply with the regulations anonymously to the Ministry of Labour.
⚠️ EXPLANATIONS
Minimum rates are divided by industry. The rates listed are gross hourly rates. The employer is additionally obliged to pay employer's tax (arbeidsgiveravgift) and set aside money for feriepenger (typically at least 10.2%). Overtime means hours worked beyond the statutory working time. Typically, this is more than 9 hours within 24 hours and more than 40 hours within 7 days. The details may vary, and the employer may have special arrangements with trade unions, shift work, etc., which may affect the definition of overtime. You can find the details in the Working Environment Act: https://www.arbeidstilsynet.no/regelverk/lover/arbeidsmiljoloven/10/10-4/
