Tax amnesty in Norway - avoid penalties and interest!
Do you want to put your situation in order with the Norwegian Tax Administration and avoid additional tax? Skatteamnesti, or tax amnesty, may be the solution. Skatteetaten offers this option to people with income and/or assets in Norway and/or abroad that were not previously reported. This can help you avoid possible penalties and interest on the tax due!
In recent years, the Norwegian Tax Administration has seen a significant increase in voluntary correction submissions. This has not only resulted in an increase of NOK 1.5 billion in taxes paid to the Norwegian state, but has also helped many people regularise their financial situation.
How does tax amnesty work?
Tax amnesty involves a voluntary correction or completion of information that was not previously submitted or taken into account, making it possible to determine the tax correctly. So if, for example, we had undeclared 50.000 kr of income from cryptocurrencies that we should have reported, Norway lost 11.000 kr on this - that is how much tax we should have paid, and interest and penalties may be charged on that amount.
To determine the tax correctly, full and accurate information must be provided. In addition, information about the source of the assets or income must also be provided. Any previously imposed additional tax will unfortunately not be cancelled.
If the conditions for voluntary correction are met, the tax office will make the correction and send a new tax return with the correct information. If we have to pay something as a result of the change - interest will be charged on the tax that should have been paid.
How many years can be corrected through tax amnesty?
According to the rules, tax amnesty can be requested for up to 10 years back. We can also correct our tax return in Norway up to 10 years back if we provided incorrect information or failed to provide information that we should have given.
Does Norway know everything?
Some people are certainly wondering: does Norway know about my earnings in Poland? Does it know about my assets in Poland? The answer is: yes, it does.
Norway has signed a number of tax information exchange agreements with other countries. There are both automatic exchange agreements and individual tax cases, VAT and country-by-country reporting. Norway has entered into these agreements to combat tax evasion and international tax crime. This means that Skatteetaten receives a great deal of information about the assets and income of Norwegian taxpayers held with foreign institutions. So the Norwegian authorities are aware of how much we earn in Poland and what assets we have there, which is why it is not worth failing to declare this in the Norwegian tax return - provided we have Norwegian tax residence.
