When should family members be registered in Norway?

Registering family members is necessary for a longer legal stay. Standard rules state that in Norway you may stay for 90 days in any 180-day period. Exceeding this limit requires registration. In practice, if you work and have already registered your stay in Norway, your family should do the same if they intend to stay here for more than 90 days.

Who can register in Norway?

For EU citizens, this applies to anyone who holds citizenship in an EU country. If one family member lives in Norway and is registered, the easiest option is registration through family reunification, which is exactly what this service covers. On this basis, the following can be registered:

  • A spouse or registered partner
  • A cohabiting partner (as a rule, this is defined as a person who has lived with the other person for more than 2 years)
  • A fiance or fiancee
  • Children and grandchildren regardless of age
  • Parents and grandparents
  • Other family members who need care

What do we need to provide the service?

We need documentation for the family member depending on their status. For each person, we need an identity document and, based on a telephone conversation, we will complete the remaining details. These will mainly be personal details.

For registration, in addition to proof of identity, the following will be needed:

  • For a spouse - a marriage certificate
  • For a cohabiting partner - proof of at least 2 years of cohabitation, for example a joint tenancy agreement or declarations from parents confirming shared residence
  • For people expecting a child together - a pregnancy certificate
  • For fiancees - confirmation of a wedding date within the next 6 months
  • For children and grandchildren - a birth certificate (for grandchildren, the birth certificate of the child and their grandchild)
  • For parents and grandparents - a birth certificate (for grandparents, the birth certificate of the reference person and the parent on the grandfather's/grandmother's side)
  • For another family member requiring care - a certificate confirming such a need and proof of the family relationship.

What does the service include?

The service includes:

  • Completing the documentation necessary for family reunification
  • Arranging the appointment date and location for identity verification and document submission
  • Instructions on what to bring to the appointment and what to do

NOTE: The decision on family registration is made by the Norwegian authorities. The service only covers mediation between you and the authorities.
