Since 2017 in Norway, D-number activation is required 5 years after it is issued. If we activate the number after this period, it will remain active for another 5 years.
The service includes:
- Checking whether your number is active.
- Booking an appointment at the office to activate the number. Unfortunately, this cannot be completed entirely online.
- Support and answers to questions regarding the office visit.
NOTE: The appointment to activate a D-number can only be carried out at SUA in Bergen, Oslo, Stavanger, Trondheim or Kirkenes.
1. What do we need to provide the service?
When visiting the office, you must bring:
- a valid ID card or, preferably, a passport.
- proof of residence permit. (optional, but recommended)
- an employment contract and a rental agreement. (optional, but recommended)
2. Why do I need to have an active D-number?
- To receive a skattekort (tax card), you must have an active D-number. Without an active D-number, you will not receive a tax card, which means that 50% tax will be deducted from each salary payment! You will therefore receive a salary that is half the usual amount, but with the annual tax return you should receive a refund in the form of part of the tax paid in advance.
- An inactive D-number may result in the closure of a bank account in Norway.
3. Procedure
A D-number becomes inactive after five years from the moment it is issued. However, after this time it does not lose its validity, nor is it removed from the database. It only needs to be reactivated. To do this, you must attend an ID-kontroll (ID check) at Skatteetaten with a valid identity document, such as an ID card or passport.
4. Waiting time
The D-number is activated on the same day you attend the ID check at the office.
5. What does the service include?
The service includes registration at the office for ID-kontroll and help preparing for the check.
