Subsistence rates - how much should remain after wage deductions
Everyone can run into financial difficulties. In this situation, it may happen that your employer receives an order for monthly deductions from your salary. These deductions can mean that the amount left for you to live on is too low.
Everyone has the right to a normal standard of living, which is why the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs sets minimum rates, i.e. the amounts that should remain in your household for you to use. “Livsoppholdssatser” are the rates that apply from 01.07.2023.
“Livsoppholdssatser” are the minimum amounts you should keep from your income for other expenses after your fixed housing costs, and expenses for childcare or maintenance, have been paid.
What exactly does this subsistence level “Livsopphold” cover?
The subsistence rates are set by the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs (Barne- og likestillingsdepartemen). The rates include expenses for food and drink, clothing and footwear, electricity and heating, health, hygiene, telephone, newspapers, television, travel, groceries, furniture, etc.). If you are left with less than the set rate, you should check whether you have provided all your basic costs related to everyday life. The Ministry does not know everything about your costs. That is why it is important to provide documentation that will be taken into account when calculating deductions. Deductions are calculated taking into account your net income, less living costs (housing, childcare, etc.) and monthly deductions towards repayment of overdue liabilities.
