Changes to benefit rules and rates in Norway from 01.01.2024
From the start of 2024, Norway introduced changes to the rules and rates for some important benefits. What has changed, and what has stayed the same? Read on!
Barnetrygd (child benefit)
From 1 January 2024, the rate of child benefit, known as barnetrygd, has increased for children over 6 years of age. The new rate is 1510 NOK, which is an increase of 200 NOK per month compared with the previous rate of 1310 NOK. For children under 6 years of age, the rate remains unchanged.

Dagpenger (unemployment benefit)
- From the new year, the 3-day waiting period has been abolished. Instead, an egenandel (deductible) has been introduced, which is deducted when the benefit is paid out. In practice, the egenandel corresponds to the previous 3-day waiting period for benefit payments.
- The benefit basis may be recalculated on request, provided that the applicant has worked for at least 12 weeks before resubmitting the application and where this is beneficial for the benefit recipient.
- People caring for children under 18 years of age will receive an additional payment to dagpenger of 36 kr for 5 days a week, up from the previous 35 kr.
Gravferdsstønad (funeral benefit)
The rate of the full funeral benefit, gravferdsstønad, increased from 27 390 NOK to 28 677 NOK from 1 January 2024. This is the rate for the full benefit, and the amount of funeral benefit is adjusted depending on the deceased person's income before death and benefits paid so far.
Other benefits
No significant changes have been recorded for other popular benefits. Most of them are based on the so-called grunnbelopet, or "G" / the "G amount", which has remained unchanged since 1 May 2023 and is 118 620 NOK.
