Gravferdsstønad – funeral allowance

Gravferdsstønad – in the case of costs incurred in connection with a funeral

The funeral allowance is intended to help cover the actual, necessary funeral expenses of a person working or living permanently in Norway.

This benefit is paid on the basis of documented invoices. You can get benefits for reimbursement of the costs of the ceremony itself, cemetery space, flowers, administrative fees, monument, cremation. It is not possible to recover the expenses for the wake and the transport of the body from Norway to Poland in this way. The office only reimburses the costs of transport to the burial place closest to the place of residence; unfortunately, in the case of a cemetery in Poland, NAV usually refuses the benefit.

The person who covers the funeral costs should apply for the benefit.

1. Who is entitled to gravferdsstønad?

To be entitled to funeral benefits, the deceased must have been a member of National Insurance at the time of death.

2. Amount of benefit

  • If the deceased was under 18 years of age, the funeral allowance is not income-related. This means that the funeral will be covered with documented costs up to NOK 28.
  • When the deceased is 18 years old, the funeral allowance is reduced based on the deceased's income before death and the benefits paid in connection with it so far. More accurate calculations are made by the office based on the information received, and we can receive a maximum of NOK 28.
