Can single parents count on a tax deduction in Norway? For now yes, but from 2024 this will not be possible. This deduction was phased out as of March 1, 2023, which means it has not been charged since then and will not be charged in the future. But does this mean that single parents will lose money? Also not entirely.
Who is entitled to the deduction?
The deduction is only available to people who support one or more children up to the age of 18 and are single, divorced, separated, widows/widowers or do not permanently live with their partner. To receive such a deduction, you must also receive utvidet barnetrygd - extended child benefit, so everything is under the control of NAV and this office automatically adds the deduction to your return.
How much were you entitled to?
For 2023, you are entitled to a total deduction of NOK 8746. Since the deduction is not valid from March 1, 2023, only two months are counted - NOK 4373 each.
However, we only take into account the months in which we were single parents. For example, if we got married in February and our partner also took over the care of the child, we will only get a deduction for one month.
What changed? – Increased barnetrigd
Even though the deduction is no longer available, single parents are not left to their own devices. As compensation, although questionable, the Barnetrygd allowance was increased. From March 1, 2023 to April 09.04.2024, XNUMX (date of publication of the article), barnetrigd amounts changed from:
- Until March 1, 2023:
- Children under 6 years of age – NOK 1676
- Children over 6 years old – NOK 1054
- From January 1, 2024:
- Under 6 years old – NOK 1766
- Over 6 years – NOK 1510
This shows that the amounts have improved, but only slightly - it still does not compensate for the losses caused by the removal of the deduction.
What about the deduction for 2023?
The deduction ended at the beginning of 2023, but was still available for full months. Therefore, in 2023 we can still deduct NOK 8746, which will give us exactly NOK 1924 in tax refund!
The deduction should be automatically included in our settlement. If this is not the case, you can make a correction this year and up to 3 years ago, and we can help!
