What are the characteristics of a sole proprietorship in Norway?

A sole proprietorship (ENK – enkeltpersonforetak) is the simplest form of running a business in Norway. The registration itself is quick and cheap (free of charge if you have good knowledge of the Norwegian language and the applicable rules). When registering this form of business, there is no obligation to pay the share capital as in the case of an AS company.

As private entrepreneurs, we have the right to withdraw all company income without any problems to our private account. In a sole proprietorship company, we can also easily employ employees. Running a business does not prohibit us from working under an employment contract - we can combine both activities!

However, it should be remembered that this form of business also has its drawbacks: first of all, if a sole proprietorship is our only source of income, we lose access to benefits such as dagpenger, i.e. unemployment benefits. Other benefits also have separate rules for self-employed people and standard workers. There is also the fact that we are responsible for the company's finances and liabilities with all our private assets.
