1. Who is entitled to dagpenger?

The main conditions are as follows::

  • You must lose at least 50% of your full-time job (if you work in several places, your total working time must be reduced)
When NAV assesses whether your working hours have been reduced by at least 50%, a maximum 40-hour working week is used as a starting point.
  • Your income must be reduced (you will not receive benefits if the reduction has not affected your income)
  • You must have earned an income of at least NOK 177 (930G) in the last 1,5 months or NOK 12 (355G) in the last 860 months. Parental benefits, maternity benefits and pregnancy-related sickness benefits are also taken into account. Income from running a business is not taken into account. People who are apprentices or have recently completed military service may be entitled to unemployment benefits regardless of their previous income.
  • You must be a real job seeker. This means that you generally must be able to work at least part-time and be willing and able to take up any job anywhere in Norway and attend job fairs.
  • Generally, you must reside in Norway and be a member of the social security system. In some cases you may be entitled to unemployment benefits from Norway even if you do not live in Norway (transferring benefits to another EU country)
  • You must be under 67 years of age. You can receive unemployment benefits until the month you turn 67.

2. Employment status (meldekort)

To receive dagpenger payments, you must submit an employment status form every 14 days. NAV uses an employment status form to track your status and calculate payments. Dagpenger is calculated and paid based on the information provided on the employment status form.

You must state how much you have worked and how long you have been active in the last 14 days and confirm that you will be registered with NAV for the next period. The fee will be calculated based on the information provided in the form. If the employment status form was completed correctly and submitted in a timely manner, payment will be made 2-3 days after the employment status form is registered.

It is important that you submit your employment status form on time. If you submit your employment status form late, the withholding will be made in your next payment equal to the number of days the employment status form was late.

Dagpenger is taxed as income.
