1. Basic information

You are entitled to a pension by working and living in Norway.
Social Security retirement is a lifetime benefit.
You can work and receive a pension at the same time.

1.1 Pillars of the Norwegian pension

The Norwegian pension consists of 3 pillars. This is a social, earned and additional pension.

Pillar 1 – social, is available to every person who has been a member of the Norwegian social security system for at least 5 years (this may be work or a benefit period).
Pillar 2 – income, is a conversion factor of what we have earned, so the basis for calculations is what we have accumulated until we retire.
Pillar 3 – is everything we have in addition, e.g. our private insurance or AFP, so it is the sum of voluntary contributions.

2. Who is entitled to a Norwegian pension?

A pension from Norway is available to anyone who has lived or worked in Norway. You can receive your pension from the first month after you turn 67.

If you earn enough, you can start receiving your pension from the month after you turn 62. 'Enough' means that your earned pension must be at least as high as the minimum pension for your age group. Please note that this may result in a significantly lower pension paid monthly. Paying out early means you spread your pension over several years, so you'll receive a smaller pension payment each year.

It is also worth mentioning that the rules of consideration also differ depending on the year of our birth, there are three age groups - people born before 1954, people born between 1954 and 1963, and also for people born after 1963.
